I'll admit, my first impression was that the writing was a bit elementary. However, the premise of the story was good, so I overlooked it, and it seemed to get better over time. The editing isn't great--a lot of misspelled and missing or wrong words, not to mention verb tense and punctuation errors--but it was manageable. I was starting to get into the story, so I let it go. I knew what it was saying.

But then the story took a turn for the worse--for the characters and the reader.

I knew Hunter was a douche from the get-go. I never liked the guy and never expected to. That's pretty much all I have to say about him.

I had a hard time figuring out whether I liked April, and even after finishing the book, I'm still not sure. Though she had some redeeming qualities, like her devotion and steadfastness, she was a bit flaky and immature. And the flying off the handle stuff was just a bit too much at times.

Jared, on the other hand, I was all about at the beginning. He was sincere and loving and sexy, while still being heartmeltingly vulnerable. But then he was the one flaking out when she finally wasn't. Over stupid drama that pretty much ruined the book for me. Especially after I read the epilogue that proved he knew how she had been there for him.

Eric's character was creepy. Even though it was a little dumb, I kind of understand his hostility and distrust toward April. But he was made out to be violent and threatening in the beginning. Like he was a psychopath. I feel like his attitude toward April was blown way out of proportion by the author.

I was over all the mess with Jack and Sera from the beginning. I realize the author was plugging her series about Sera, but it didn't really add much to the story. Just more random drama. Like the book needed any more.

I guess here is also a good place to mention the inconsistencies with real life that occur in this book. College institutions are not understanding about depressions caused by break-ups. Neither are jobs. No way could she have missed like 2 weeks of school because of her broken heart and come back still enrolled in classes. Also, for someone who is completely broke, she sure wasn't worried about taking her depressed butt to work. Or about her lingerie shopping spree. Since apparently her long-time boyfriend she was so broken up over had only been worthy of granny panties.

Don't get me started on her stupid strutting.

And then it fell apart...
While some of the first half of the book was corny and a bit exaggerated, the second half was pretty much one big eye roll. Once I got to the accident (maybe that's not too much of a spoiler), the book took a nosedive and pretty much crashed and burned. There had been a good balance of love and drama up until this point. This extra fiasco wasn't needed. A lot of it was extremely farfetched, definitely over-dramatic, and completely unnecessary. Waving IV needles in threatening ways at hospital staff? Come on! And then the nurse who was supposedly the best nurse ever freezing up during a traumatic episode, only for the non-professional to save the day... utterly ridiculous. I understand what the author was trying to set up, but, as previously stated, it was farfetched. The whole end of the book was reaching, and it turned an enjoyable read into a story I couldn't get finished with quick enough.

I'm glad I caught this book when it was free. I would have been much more disappointed if I'd paid for this letdown.

I gave Discovering April 3 stars because I truly was enjoying it in the beginning. I'm sad it went the soap opera-ish direction it did.

Discovering April The Discovering Trilogy Book 1 eBook Sheena Hutchinson Reviews

Sheena Hutchinson is a new to me author and I just love her writing style. I was on such an emotional rollercoaster ride with these characters. April, is our lead here and man, her guy (and I use the term loosely), is horrible. I wanted to reach through my kindle and slap them both! Hunter for being such a jerk, and April for taking him back. Ugh! I digress. Jared who is April's neighbor and at one time best friend has stayed on the outskirts of her life, after he the death of his parents. Once April, is rid of her ex, she's on the verge of hitting bottom. Jared, is unable to sit sidelined anymore. Quite randomly he inserts himself into her life, to help her remember who she is without Hunter. I laughed, sobbed, cried and cheered during this story. My most favorite scenes are when they are getting doughnuts. It to me is now the cure for everything. I really look forward to reading more from Ms. Hutchinson in the future. 4.5/5 stars. **I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ** Cross posted to Book Reviews and Take-overs as well as My Reading Reality.**

April Landau thinks she has it all. Her high school sweetheart; Hunter, her own home and her cat! April’s about start junior year at college. Hunter and April’s relationship wasn’t perfect and their little arguments were often witnessed by an amused Jared. But after discovering her boyfriend has cheated, April ends it for good and descends into a spiral of emotions and despair.

Jared Hoffman is April’s next door neighbour. They were childhood friends who drifted apart. He dropped out of high school to take over his parents business after they died, their death having a profound effect on him. He keeps himself to himself, doesn’t really mix with anyone and throws himself into his work. However, he’s carting a burden of his own, a secret he’s never told anyone which weighs him down every day.

Jared calls round to find April crying and upset, and slowly the two of them rekindle a lost friendship. Jared has harboured feelings for April for years too. So he helps April rediscover herself and the two of them can no longer deny the feelings that have grown. When tragedy strikes, Aprils emotions are tested once again. Hunter re-enters her life wanting her back, will she revert to type and go back to her old familiar self, or will she embrace a new future with Jared?

This book is told only from April’s point of view and I must confess I would have loved it if Jared had given his. It would have brought so much more to the story. It took a while to get going but once it did, I was hooked. Lots of twists and turns, emotions and of course; love, which all makes for a great story. The character of April I didn’t care for at first, although I think I changed my opinion of her when Jared walked into her life. She changed with him for the better, and Jared… what a man!! He was kind, caring, and sweet but kind of closed off. I loved him straight away. It’s very emotional in parts too which had me filling up!!

Overall, it’s a great read. Sometimes I found it a bit slow, though it did pick up again. The twists and turns will keep you invested in the story holding on till the end and what an ending!!!
